What is the best way to clean the surface of a kitchen range hood?
Stainless steel hoods should be cleaned regularly with a clean rag or cloth soaked in warm water mixed with a mild soap or dish detergent. Rinse with clear water and dry immediately. Always clean in the direction of the grain (direction of the polish lines). Furniture polish oil may also be used to accent the hood’s glossy finish.
What do the CFM and Sone ratings mean?
CFM stands for Cubic Feet per Minute of exhausting air flow. The higher the number, the greater the amount of air
that is exhausted using the rangehood. Think of it as how much faster the air would be cleaned...the higher the CFM,
the faster the air is cleaned. But usually this means the higher the Sone.
A Sone is an internationally recognized unit of loudness. Sones are a linear measure like inches.
Doubling the sone value is equivalent to doubling the loudness.
Which is better, ducted or non-ducted ?
Range hoods should be ducted to the outside of the home. While non-ducted filters trap some of the grease and odors from normal cooking, the humidity, smoke and heat will all be re-circulated back into the home. If the non-ducted filters are not regularly replaced, eventually the grease and odor catching effect will no longer protect your home from impurities.
How high should I mount my hood above my stove?
We usually recommend a range of 18" - 24" between the bottom of the range hood and the top of the cook top. This will provide the best capture area for cooking impurities.
How often should I clean my filters?
The aluminum mesh grease filters should be washed in your dishwasher about every month depending
on the amount of usage. (Often, people wait until the filter looks dirty.)
Wash regularly if you cook grease like frying foods or wok cooking.
Baffle filters used in professional style range hoods are designed to operate longer in high
grease conditions without loss of performance. Usually, the Baffle filters need to be cleaned
with soap and water whenever the surfaces become sticky.
Can I exhaust my hood into my attic instead of out the roof or wall?
No. You should never exhaust air into spaces within walls, ceilings, attics, crawl spaces or garages.
This will lead to a house fire. This is especially important to why we urge you to have
a professional installer do range hood installation.
It seems as though my cooktop grates are chipping and the aluminum is showing through. How can I get them to look new again?
Most likely, the grates have not chipped. It is usually metal from your pots and pans rubbing off on the grates. There are two ways to clean this: one is to use a brass brush and water. This will remove the metal markings. The other is to apply Cook Top Cleaning Crème to the grates use the abrasive side of a sponge. Finish by rinsing well. Both of these ways should return your grates to their original color.
How do I clean the yellow stain around my cooktop burners or on my range’s stainless steel backsplash?
Always try the least abrasive method depending on the amount of discoloration. Degreasers, powdered cleaners and cleaning pads may all be used. When using pads, please take care to use minimum pressure and go with the grain of the stainless steel. For stubborn stains, you may use oven cleaners making sure to follow the instructions on the product for use on stainless steel. In most cases this means protecting the burner heads when applying the product to the stained area, and allowing it to stand for the recommended time. When finished, please be certain to rinse well to remove any remaining residue.
